It ain't over yet. For the people of the gulf the trials are only beginning. For the rest of us the test of enduring compassion is still ahead.

James Yee
You know sincerity and integrity when you see it, but religion and politics frequently stunts our willingness to recognize these most basic of human virtues.

Out Of The Rain
For the second year in a row I had the honor of contributing to the United Way of King County's calender highlighting the issue of homelessness.

Norm Stamper
Not at all the man I expected to meet. Instead of a courteous shoot with an ex-chief of police, I found myself discussing cinema and the difficulties of Gunter Grass' 'The Flounder'.

The Best of 2005 - Editorial Images

Frequently I am impressed and surprised by the people I photograph on my editorial assignments. For the most part the publications and clients that I shoot for are concerned with challenging the social status quo and/or supporting those aspects of our society that promote equity and human dignity across broad demographic lines. This brings me close to people active on the margins and close to the centers of power in our community.

I often find myself interacting in these extremes on the same day. On one particular day in the summer of 2005 I found myself photographing homeless teens at a shelter and within an hour and a half at a mansion in an exclusive waterfront community photographing state supreme court judges, trial lawyers and bar association officials.

Normally such contrasts don't register consciously until after shoots. That particular day however I had the benefit of having a brief conversation with an attorney while we were waiting for the valets to bring us our cars. The conversation started out innocuously enough and gradually grew more insightful. When I mentioned that I just come from shooting an assignment at a shelter for homeless teens my companion's interest piqued instantaneously.   He wanted to know what it was like moving between such different worlds.
