The Best of 2005 - Personal Work
2005 found me committing more time to purely creative photographic pursuits. This is not new or surprising in itself, what is interesting is the emerging presence of the natural world as subject, subtext and context.
I don't consider myself a nature photographer. In all the years that I have been a photographer I have focused almost exclusively on people with an emphasis on social documentary. Landscapes and nature were little more than an occasional footnote in my overall body of work.
Early in the year I renewed an old exercise of creating a regular schedule for taking photos that are purely creative. The exercise approaches photography as a purely intuitive process. As a matter of process I leave early in the morning, without an agenda, and photograph the first thing that catches my eye. Once I have fully explored that subject or location I move on until something else.
