Adelia's Poem

my mama said
being beautiful
ain’t got nothing to do with
Barbie and all them monsters
made by Mattel;
ain’t got nothing to do with
“silly combs” in the breasts
and horse weave in a woman’s head;
(how do you comb breasts anyway?)

my mama said
being beautiful
ain’t got nothing to do with
with how chocolate or vanilla
a woman’s skin is or
how big or small,
short or tall,
round or straight
any of her parts are…

my mama said
being beautiful is
how "the whole of a woman shines"
like giggle tears from a slap happy moon
bursting with love and laughter
‘til she c’ain’t help but spill joy that sparkles
all over the sky.
my mama ought to know
‘cause she’s a star.
