Between 1995 and 2000 I lived in an apartment complex in Southwest Atlanta with eight units. I had a roomate, Isaac Filyaw (a.k.a "Ike") the whole time I lived there. We were the first of many friends to move into the building. Over time four of the other seven units in the building became occupied by friends of ours from college, high school and other places. This made for a very communal atmosphere that was rich with activity and full of love. In addition to those who lived in the building there would always be numerous friends and relatives who came through to hang out on a regular basis. Eventually we pulled those who lived in the building before us into our community as well. Some of the best years of my life, indeed. The building was 1540 Olympian Cir, Atlanta, GA 30310. I lived in Apartment #1.
When I wasn't making images I dreamed about making images. In order to appease this creative diety I created an ongoing project of photographing the willing (and sometimes the not so willing) on the front patio of the building whenever they came by. The approach was minimalistic; a chair, a brick wall, the address sign and a friend. I call the series 1540 Folk in honor of the community we built between the years of 1995 and 2003. Since I began this blogging project I have added other images from 1540 to this series. Though not in the same aesthetic genre as the 1540 portraits, these images do document various aspects of the daily life of 1540 that caught my attention over the years.
